This is my fourth assignment. I love how the sea breeze has twisted the branches around. My goal was to work with warm and cool planes on objects. The upward surfaces would reflect the cool sky and the downward surfaces would reflect the warmth of the sand. The vertical planes would reflect what is next to it. For example a rock: the upward or top would be a cool blue grey, the underneath of any over hang part of the rock would be painted a warm grey and the vertical or side surfaces would reflect the object near it. Of course there is always some exceptions.

This is a painting of the Maroon Bell Mountains in Colorado. I painted it in a thick painterly way using the palette knife most of the time. It will take a little longer to dry but I like the effect of the palette knife. It was a nice break from brushes and was excellent practice for me. I hope you enjoy my mountain stream painting with all the gorgeous nuggets of reflective colors. I love all the colors of fall but the fresh crisp color of spring is something I always look forward to year round.

I painted this using a reference photo from my class. I added rocks and adjusted tree lines, etc. Usually when I am painting from a photo that I took or someone else, towards the end I am painting straight with the painting. I turn the monitor off and just look at the painting and ask it what it needs. If my eye movement seems to fall off the page then I know to darken an area, minimize detail or add something to stop the movement. I feel this painting has a nice movement to it. I hope you think so too.

I painted this using a photo from Francis Klinkemallie. He is a popular photographer and artist on the Paint My Photo website better known by Franklin. Unfortunately he passed away this last February and PMP has a challenge going on now to honor Franklin. I have painted from Franklin's photos before, "Street Musicians" from Praque naming one. His photographs are amazing. Franklin solves a lot of the composition problems for you which I greatly appreciate. When I painted from his sunflower photo it was if the painting just fell together. I love the strong light and shadows I saw. His generosity will always be felt for many years as other artist will definitely be using his wonderful photo references.

I was really surprised one day when I saw a cardinal in the pine tree behind the house. I ran for my camera but missed the shot. So I just got the pine branch. It was a wonderful sunny day and the branch seem to reach out to the sun. I decided to paint the image I first saw with the photo I had and a cardinal reference photo I found on Paint My Photo. I was very lucky to find a photo of a cardinal that looked just like the one I saw. I painted the branch as loose as I could using quite a lot of paint. Then I rubbed out a place for the bird. The cardinal has more of a dry brush stroke to capture the soft feathery look.
