This is my last painting assignment for Elizabeth Robbins' online course. The assignment was silver, peony and "S" composition. Elizabeth is an excellent teacher. I encourage anyone who likes to paint flowers to look her up. She won't be hard to find. Her paintings are well known.

My goal was to concentrate on a softer looking flower approach and to leave background items less detailed. I love her paintings and was so excited to hear that she has a six month online course. I will send this to her and hope I do not have to make major changes. Wish me luck.

This is one of the paintings I made for my online course with Elizabeth Robbins. I used her photograph to paint from that is shown below. I hope to post a better photo of my painting above after it is varnished. The table top and blue blossoms are darker and have more hue in them. I will photograph it on a sunny day.

This is her painting she did for us as a demonstration. She painted it in two hours roughly. Of course my painting took about 8 hours.

Here are some of my in process photos posted below.

The first step was to block in the shapes I see without thinking about what they represent. Basically just think of them as abstract shapes.

Next I worked on the background and table which will help me get the values right in the roses. I noticed right away they where way to light.

Now I start on the large left rose. Adding more detail and contrast. Unfortunately I became very frustrated and moved on to the other roses. I found out using a little less detail and more soft edges made the rose look like real roses. I knew all the roses will need more work but I needed to take a break so I worked the glass vase. What fun!

The next day I revisited the roses adding less contrast in the left rose and finishing the vase and table scraps.

Checking the highlights and adding new paint to freshen them up if needed. I also decided the background hue was to saturated and too gold. I spent an hour working on just that. I hate it when I get the background wrong but I am much happens with the less saturated darker hue. I used a transparent oxide red, olive green and gray violet to wash over the background colors.

Well I thought I was done. I photographed it, loaded it on the computer and stopped. I could not take my eyes off the glass reflection. When my eyes settle on a spot and stop moving I know I got a problem. The reflection is competing with the flowers. I need to calm it down so you do not notice it as much as the flowers.

This is my finished painting below. The table hue is much like the photo above but the day light was getting darker and the colors look washed out in this photo.

Original Oil Painting: Low Tide

I used a photo from Jim Humphrey on PaintMyPhoto. He called his photo Staithes Beck 1. I posted the photo below. I made a few changes : I flipped the image because I like my focal point on the left side. I added several seagulls which seems appropriate when painting boats and adds to the whimsical aspect of the painting. I also changed my original title: Waiting to Low Tide thanks to my Facebook friends and Paint On friends!

This painting was quite a challenge because the photo was too bright on the right side so I used my imagination quite a bit on that part of the painting. Shadows in photographs can look flat and darker than in real life, too. I have painted outdoors before so I made allowances for these things but found that in Jim's photo there was enough info. to draw from in the shadows which helped a lot. Original Oil Painting Rose Blossoms

I painted this using a combination of photos. One for the vase and another for everything else. Of course there are little ideas of my own all over the place. I made the bowl the flowers are lying in silver, to reflect the colors around it. The ties hanging off the pot help pull the viewers eye in. The background which I did first was a bit of a challenge. I wanted it to use all the colors I plan to use in the painting put making them a darker shade to help them recede. The pattern I painted as if it was on a shear transparent fabric, something elegant to go with the roses. Now the roses are more like bush roses. Those I stuck mostly to the photo reference but just push the color contrast more. I was going for a warm, elegant, look.

Here is a nice autumn painting! This is another painting I made for my weekly paint class. I just finished a commission portrait that I can not post because it is going to be a gift. The portrait was such a challenge that it made this one a blast. The object of the lesson was to use as many brush and palette techniques as possible. See if you can count all the different paint applications.

Original Oil Painting Geraniums and Apples

Here is my final painting! I added a small red petal on the right to help balance the large apple on the far left. I put in speed bumps in the middle of the table cloth, no more straight path to the bottom. I also darken the bottom of the red apple in the background on the left to add a little more shape. Then I glazed over the left table leaf to darken it with olive green. Lots of little tweaks and a better photo, yeah!

IS IT DONE?? I will let you know. I am taking a break and will look at it tomorrow.

This is one of my larger paintings. I like this still life because of the variations of textures: glass, clay and copper. I added the tomatoes because I wanted a strong color on the left to balance the large golden sunflowers. There are a lot of strong items in this painting but they all play so well with each other. I really enjoyed painting this still life.

Finally had time to deal with the tapestry. I brighten the table top in front of the focal point and tamed down the tapestry in the shadows. I also brighten the flowers more by restating the highlights and changed the shadow color on the center white daisy. Now the center flower sings. Please note: if you saw this post before I have updated the photo. The first photo was wash out or over expose photo? So I put a light coat of medium over it and took another try photographing it.

I added the final touches to the still life. I darken the background on the cloth and brighten the high-lighten part of the cloth. I also brighten some areas of the side of the copper I thought looked a little dirty. I am happy with the results so I am calling it finished. Yeah!!
