I found this little, lovely by the pond. I love how it was basking in the warm, sunlight. The top of the iris was a very peachy, pink while the bottom petals were a soft, light violet. It had such stark contrast of light and dark that I was afraid I might over state it. I will think on this and come back to it tomorrow.

I could not wait until tomorrow. I took a two hour break and I was back at it again. I added a little more contrast to the background to balance the strong contrasting values in the iris. Then I checked all my colors one more time looking for any muddy shades and adding more color to my hues. Increasing the saturation of color in the iris helped warm it up and made it less washed out. The photo below is what I posted first. I hope you can see the difference.

I painted this from a photo I took of a tulip in the shadows but captured by a spot of light filtering through the tree buds above. As the wind blew the tulip went from sun to shadow. Since I first saw it in the shadows I decided to call it Shadow Tulip. It was luck that I captured  the tulip when the light was hitting it.  Thanks for viewing my Spring Tulip of 2017!

There is only one thought that comes to mind: This was a tough one! It took a lot longer to paint than I thought at first. I thought of chucking it out the windows many times. Instead I would just took a break and come make to it. I was painting from a photo of a butterfly which was terrific except the flowers were hard to make out. In fact I ended up changing the flowers completely from little pink flowers to large purple morning glories. The purple is a compliment to yellow and would help contrast the butterfly. The large flowers and leaves really helped balance the whole painting out. The photo I used is posted below and I hope that helps you understand my problem with it.

I saw some crocus flowers growing right in the grass yesterday and I knew what my next painting would be. When I have trouble thinking of what to paint I usually try doing something else and ideas just come. I am always thing of art even subconsciously so that is no surprise. But to be able to act on it with out worry about making dinner, house work etc. is.

In this painting I tried to make the colors pop out using a blue discord color. There was a blue flower any way so instead of changing it to gold, I went with it. I added hints of blue to the grass like leaves that were pushing through the flowers to carry the discord through out the painting. In the background I painted broken pieces of  warm grey purples to compliment the yellow. 

The composition of the painting  looks like the crocus flowers are fighting through each other to get to the sunlight. I can not blame them. Sunlight is something we treasure in Wisconsin winters.

I thought it would be fun to try a thicker panel with a slight texture to paint on. I thought it went well. The paint did not sink in as some gesso boards do. Because the panel is heavier, it will cost a little more to ship. I hope that doesn't scare buyers off to pay a few dollars more. With the added thickness the panel comes with a pre-drill hanging hole and black painted edges. This way the buyer has options: frame it or hang it as is.

This is a painting of the Maroon Bell Mountains in Colorado. I painted it in a thick painterly way using the palette knife most of the time. It will take a little longer to dry but I like the effect of the palette knife. It was a nice break from brushes and was excellent practice for me. I hope you enjoy my mountain stream painting with all the gorgeous nuggets of reflective colors. I love all the colors of fall but the fresh crisp color of spring is something I always look forward to year round.

This painting was 100% fun! Getting to paint with wonderful shades of pink and to top it off adding a golden crown. I have always loved zinnias and this was painted using one of my garden photos. I guess I will be planting zinnias again this year.
