Well it is another day and I decided on this windy, cold, snow day to added the chimney and do some clean-up. What do you think? A little cold, snowy days for Christmas or a plane ticket to Arizona?

When I first posted this painting it was the small photo below. The tree branches needed adjusting especially the strong white curved line leading the viewer's eye out of the composition. I also needed a better photo. The photo below was too bright or washed out. At first I thought it was my computer screen but when I saw it on my iPad too, I knew it was the lighting in which I took the photo. The sun is much lower in the sky and shines into the studio room like a search light later in the day.  Today's photo on top is much better. I took the photo this morning vs late afternoon the day before.  I fixed the crazy branches and got a much better photo to represent the painting. I probably should not of posted as soon as the painting was finished for the day. It did give me the chance to explain the process of photographing and remind me that viewing the painting on a screen or seeing the painting in  reverse through a mirror can give the artist a fresh look. That way the artist might see mistakes he or she made and fix them.

Here is one of my oriental lilies that grow in my front yard. Their fragrance is quiet potent so I painted it from a photo and now it sits in my garage. It is a good thing the snifter glass can not smell.

I added the dark red cherries to compliment the dark tips in the center of the lily. The cherries are probably wondering why they are not in the glass, maybe next time. I have been taking a lot of Iris photos as of late. I really wanted to paint a yellow one but just could not get the right photo so I used one from Richard William Haynes. Richard posted the photo below on a Facebook page: Photos for Artist. Thanks Richard for the excellent photo. I love the light on the Iris and tried to capture it in my painting.

 My goal was to vary my edges as much as possible. To have the background push into the edges and pull out edges. I used thicker paint on the highlighted area to draw them to the viewer. The hardest decision was the background value. I wanted it dark but not too dark. I am pretty happy with my decision, hope my viewers are too.

This is a fun little painting. I like how the fence frames the house in the distance. At first I was going to call it "Fenced In " but the more I looked at it I felt the opposite. Here is the first signs of winter with a little of snow creeping in under the fence. As we all know winter is coming and there is no stopping it.

This is a begonia study I am doing for my class. The objective is to make the background more abstract. I will see how it looks tomorrow and add any final changes. I know the center top background color will be darken and probably have some other colors to it. It is just too annoying. I am also thinking the green is too dense, some holes might be added to give it more an airy feel. So far the flowers are ok except the two bottom ones look like twins. These are the things I look at when I am finishing up. It is a process, when you change one thing it can make you want to change another. Please check back tomorrow and see what happens. This is the final. I hope you can see the changes. Some of the leafs are lighter and not as heavy. I introduced blue washes and nuggets of blue to open up the the middle more. Soften and lighten all around the edges of the painting to keep the viewers' eyes  from leaving. Added final details to the center of focus (clusters of flowers in the middle) making them cleaner and brighter. After all that the blue top background only needed a little tweaking and the painting came alive!

I painted this when I was also painting the portrait Jeff listed below. Here again I worked on reflective colors and glow. I soften the egg and orange to give them a glow look. I painted some reflective color in the egg and orange also. If you look closely you can see the orange half reflected in the whole orange and a hit of the table color in the egg's shadow. I painted this from a still life I created and photo I took. The idea came from my class. I decided to use the same objects given in the class photo assignment but use my own camera. That way I got a different perspective than the class photo.

This painting was 100% fun! Getting to paint with wonderful shades of pink and to top it off adding a golden crown. I have always loved zinnias and this was painted using one of my garden photos. I guess I will be planting zinnias again this year.

I painted this using a still life photo I took a week ago.  I usually like to take many still life photos at once. I chose a set-up I like and proceed to paint. I do not delete the other photos because I can paint them later. I just won't have the objects sitting in front of me.

I think G+ is working again. I am sorry if anyone did not receive a posting. In this painting, I am trying a layer technique Dan Edmundson taught in his master class. It is a technique that Richard Schmid uses so well. As you layer the background to create volume you add more paint. So the first layer is just scrubbed in. The next layer you add a little more paint but keep it some what light or should I say transparent. The top layer is more opaque and detailed but do not forget to let the other layer show through here and there.

This is my first attempt at painting a pomegranate. It was easier to get the seeds out than to paint them. Those shinning little seeds are yummy! I like my in yogurt, so sweet and good for you.
