My goal was to paint something only using two items with multiple color changes. I chose a Macintosh Apple and a silver canning funnel. Those choices made thing a little more difficult but the spiral peel is what caught my interest. I took a photo of the still life to paint from because the peel kept moving.  

I love painting multiple colors next to each other but when you use complimentary colors you need to keep your brush clean. Complimentary colors can darken one and another which is ok if done right but if that is not the intent it can look dirty.

Here is another painting of Goodwill items: the glass decanter and gold reflective metal bowl. Yes, the gold is not real but it is some kind of metal bowl painted gold and the decanter has a heavy metal ornate handle with lid. I threw in a vintage table cloth and fruit to complete the still life. 

I gave it the title: Fragile Glass because I keep thinking the glass will break some day, so better paint it now. The handle and lid will last forever but they are nothing with out the glass. 

I loved painting all the reflections and I like how the cloth recedes while the leaves come forward. There is a lot of pull and push in the composition if that makes any sense?  

By the way that is not an apple in the bowl. It is a plum that hasn't ripened yet, but by the time I finished this painting the plum was rip to eat, yum!

My main goal in this one was to put the paint down with out messing with it too much. So much easier said than done. This is the fifth or sixth still life I painted working with a wet on wet painting technique. I still find myself blending with a soft brush or palette knife along the edges of different color values. I guess this is my preferred style. Old habits that work well for me are hard to break but I do see my edges are improving.

Here is another painting I made of a creamer. I love finding these vintage creamers and other things at Goodwill. In this painting I worked hard at keeping the strongest highlights on the center of interest which means making the grapes, orange and dish in the background more subdued. That orange kept wanting to jump into center stage but after painting it three times I am satisfied where it is: strong but silent?

I took a few days off to straighten up the house and yard. The garage is clean, the basement is sorted out and the flower bed is gone. I still have enough flowers to paint from but this one flower bed was too big to keep the weeds out so now it will be grass.

Well now that I have my chores done, I can focus on my painting.  I hope you like my little glazed vase. You probably have seen flowers in a vase but now you can see a vase in flowers. Yes, the top is slated and the black eye daisies are from my garden. These are the ones I saved. Even thou they look a little worn out, they fit the painting nicely.

This is the painting I am currently working on. I am happy with everything but the background. I will let it dry and try adding glazes, maybe lighten the right corner? There comes a time where I need to step away from a painting and come back to it later. This is one of those times. When painting becomes more like work than fun, it is time to take a break.

Today I put the final touches on. I added glazes to the background, added a few extra leaves on the right and dropped the highlight value on the green leaves coming out of the vase. Now I am happy and I hope you can see the difference between the last picture I posted. (There is a picture of it right below.) Thanks for viewing my Ruby Peony!

I painted this using a lot more palette knife than I usually do. My goal was to loosen up and try to create interesting brush strokes. Using the palette knife helped with this goal but also created slightly bigger flowers. The gold in this painting is very strong but the red apple is strong enough to create an interesting tension between the two.  Any way I am on the mend after that terrible cold last week and it feels great painting again!!

I borrowed this black iron teapot from my brother. He uses this teapot in the winters to heat tea on his cast iron stove. That little stove does a great job heating up his three season room and also makes a great cup of tea. Thanks Gary for letting me borrow the teapot.

This is my first attempt at painting a pomegranate. It was easier to get the seeds out than to paint them. Those shinning little seeds are yummy! I like my in yogurt, so sweet and good for you.
