I found this little, lovely by the pond. I love how it was basking in the warm, sunlight. The top of the iris was a very peachy, pink while the bottom petals were a soft, light violet. It had such stark contrast of light and dark that I was afraid I might over state it. I will think on this and come back to it tomorrow.

I could not wait until tomorrow. I took a two hour break and I was back at it again. I added a little more contrast to the background to balance the strong contrasting values in the iris. Then I checked all my colors one more time looking for any muddy shades and adding more color to my hues. Increasing the saturation of color in the iris helped warm it up and made it less washed out. The photo below is what I posted first. I hope you can see the difference.

I have been taking a lot of Iris photos as of late. I really wanted to paint a yellow one but just could not get the right photo so I used one from Richard William Haynes. Richard posted the photo below on a Facebook page: Photos for Artist. Thanks Richard for the excellent photo. I love the light on the Iris and tried to capture it in my painting.

It has been quite a challenge to paint as of late. My ninety three old father has been in and out of rehab, hospital and nursing home for the past couple of months. Dad is staying strong even thou his body is failing and the whole family is helping as best as we can. This painting of a blue Iris expresses my father's strength against the unbeatable hot background that threatens him. The green spiky leaves are all the people trying to help. There is a real battle of color in this painting as there is in my father's life now.

I completed the iris today. I spent about two hours going over the whole painting. This is a slower process. Towards the end I am adjusting colors with some glazing and painting with more nuggets of color. I check highlights to make sure they are clean and bright. I look for any muddy colors and correct them with a fresh stroke of color. I did add a discord color with the blue to draw attention to areas but only in small amounts. I also added a tint of lemon green to reflective parts. This has to be done very carefully or it can quickly muddy things up. I do not know the real name for this iris but it looks pretty regal hence the name Royal Iris. I really love how the peach color glows in the sunlight and the burgundy color looks like velvet.
