 I took some photos before devouring this sweet treat. I had to swipe a cherry from my husband's eclair to balance the composition and it was well worth it. I think all eclairs should come with two cherries, don't you? Yummy to eat and fun to paint.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it is back to painting! This is a painting of a still life I created. Getting all those cherries to turn the right way was quite frustrating but in the end they all behaved. They must know Christmas is around the corner and Santa is coming. HO-HO

I painted this from a photograph of a still life I created in my studio. When I sent up a still life I would use several different compositions before deciding on one. I take photos of each to view and compare. The Fruit Maze was the one I choose to paint first. This was a second choice I saved for later. It is more complicated and I wanted to practice with the fruit alone before adding my orange flowers. I am not sure what the flowers are called, a student gave me some seeds along time ago. They come back every year and transplant very well. Thanks Abby for the seeds. I enjoy the flowers every year!

Here is one of my oriental lilies that grow in my front yard. Their fragrance is quiet potent so I painted it from a photo and now it sits in my garage. It is a good thing the snifter glass can not smell.

I added the dark red cherries to compliment the dark tips in the center of the lily. The cherries are probably wondering why they are not in the glass, maybe next time. I have been busy lately but found some time to paint fruit. The kiwi fruit is always a fun challenge with its yellow green and blue green color, pattern with seeds and its' fuzzy outer skin. The biggest challenge I found was the composition. It took me over an hour to arrange the fruit and get the lighting correct. I decided to try a warmer light with this composition which in my mind gives it a softer look. Thanks for viewing my fruit maze!

My main goal in this one was to put the paint down with out messing with it too much. So much easier said than done. This is the fifth or sixth still life I painted working with a wet on wet painting technique. I still find myself blending with a soft brush or palette knife along the edges of different color values. I guess this is my preferred style. Old habits that work well for me are hard to break but I do see my edges are improving.

My goal in this still life was to limit my number of brush strokes painting the fruit. To keep the colors bright and deliberate. It worked out well with the oranges, plum, cherries and even the silver bowl but the glass bottle was a different story. There was too many colors blending together for that to work for me.

My biggest challenge in this painting was to create a strong light source coming through the lace curtain. The cherries on the branch needed to be back lit  and cast shadows on leaves behind them. To create interest, I also made the leaves let some of the light show through. Once I did the branch in front of the window everything seem to pop. The painting came alive!

  I really like how the cherries have circle around to see the wild flowers. This is a very playful painting with dramatic lighting. The sparkle in the glass also has a very playful quality. Thanks for viewing my painting.
