This was HARD!!! It took longer and a lot of adjusting. Today I put the finishing glazes on. I used a linseed medium to apply them and opening windows is a must. I do not know what I hate more the odor of varnish or mediums. I tried to use walnut oil but it didn't quite work as smooth as the mediums. 

Glazes are made with lots of medium and a little oil paint so they are transparent. Glazes can be used to unify areas where there are lots of color changes in them like the cloth. I used a low key warm violet glazes on the shadows of the cloth. That way they still have color changes in them but they do not stand out as the highlighted areas do.  I also use glazes to push areas back. The background color has a white glaze over it. The glaze dulls and lightens the dark color making it recede.  So now I am going to take a long walk and breath in some fresh air. Thanks for viewing my painting: Veggies.

Here is my painting of my son's glass star vase that he bought at the dollar store years ago. It has been sitting on a shelf waiting to be painted. I finally took the plunge and painted it. To my surprise it was not as hard as I thought. I just pre-mixed as many of the colors I saw on the glass. Doing that I could concentrate on the placement and forms of the colors. It took some time to paint but I love all the fractured color in it with its' flicks of white highlights all about. I posted a picture of the arrangement I was painting from below. I did change the leaf branch because it was hiding the beautiful clay vase way too much. I just forgot to take a picture of that arrangement.

This painting has a variety of textures to communicate and became quite a challenge. I enjoy painting different shinning objects. Glass will reflect light different than metal for instance. Glass has reflective light in the jar and in the shadow it cast. Metal can vary too. I found the jar's lid was newer and shinier than the old metal funnel. The shine on new metal has more contrast verses old metal where it blends more. It is light that fascinates me the most plus variety. I hope my little painting has enough of both to keep viewers coming back and seeing more and more each time. Thanks for viewing my painting.

Went to the grocery store yesterday and saw this colorful squash. I knew immediately this was going to be my next painting. So I looked around for vegetable compliments and found some roma tomatoes, pea pods and scallions. Now to get home and put a display together before someone eats it! My husband is very considerate and usually asks: "Donna can I eat this or are you going to paint it?" What a nice guy!

Some paintings almost paint themselves. This is one that did not. I really struggled with it. I had to force the warm harmony on the daisies and that was a battle. Everything in the still life had a warm tone to them except the yellow daisies, wierd. But I was not going to give up even if the tomatoes started to look a little tried. I must of painted the daisies three times before I could get the right values. I ended up using a reference photo I took to help finish up and then just turn to the painting and asked what do you need. Forget the still life, forget the reference photo I took, just focus on the painting.  Because in the end it is only the painting that matters!

This is one of my larger paintings. I like this still life because of the variations of textures: glass, clay and copper. I added the tomatoes because I wanted a strong color on the left to balance the large golden sunflowers. There are a lot of strong items in this painting but they all play so well with each other. I really enjoyed painting this still life.

We had a little get together a couple of weeks ago and my brother in law, Harvey was kind enough to serve his " Bloody Mary's ".  Harvey also brought some of his brother Bobbie's canned mushrooms. Since I am not a Bloody Mary drinker, I decided to take photos with the help of my niece, Amy. It was quite a family affair. Unfortunately Harvey had to wait to drink his because we were taking many photos with different compositions and lighting. This is the results!
