I have been working on two paintings at once. The portrait you see here and the Orange and Egg painting above. There are a lot of similar techniques you use in both still life and portrait painting. I was trying to focus on receding colors and advancing colors. Even thou Jeff's face has a warm shadow, I used cool colors to show receding colors on the lighted half of his face and warm colors to show advancing colors. I also try to show reflective background color on both sides where the face recedes.

This is a portrait of my dog, Tuck. Tuck gives me this stare when he is waiting for me to finish cleaning up my paint area. He knows soon it will be his time to get my attention and with luck a walk will soon follow. Unfortunately it has been very cold this November so playing fetch in the house will be the order of the day.
